Personal Public Service (PPS) number is a unique reference number that helps you access social welfare benefits, public services and information in Ireland. A PPS Number is always 7 numbers followed by either one or 2 letters. It is sometimes called a PPSN.

Importance of PPS number.

A PPS number is a unique reference number that lets you: Register with Revenue for tax (if you are working in Ireland) Apply for a social welfare payment (including Child Benefit) Apply for a driving licence

Does a PPS number expire?

Your PPS number won't expire however the physical card itself (also known as a public services card) has an expiry date. This card will be issued to you when you successfully apply for your PPS number.    

Who can use PPS number?

Only bodies specified in legislation and their agents can use the PPS Number - these are referred to as Specified Bodies. Specified Bodies are asked to submit a return for this register which outlines their ongoing use and future plans for the PPS Number.
